- early 15c., from L. fastidiosus "disdainful, squeamish, exacting," from fastidium "loathing," most likely from *fastu-taidiom, a compound of fastus "contempt, arrogance" and tжdium "aversion, disgust." Early use in Eng. was in both passive and active senses.
